Attachment Focused EMDR

This trauma-processing technique helps clients gently access and resolve stuck emotional memories while building a felt sense of safety and connection.

What is Attachment-Focused EMDR (AF-EMDR)

Attachment-Focused EMDR combines the power of traditional EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) with a deep focus on relational repair and emotional attachment. This trauma-processing technique helps clients gently access and resolve stuck emotional memories while building a felt sense of safety and connection. AF-EMDR is particularly effective for early attachment wounds, developmental trauma, and experiences where support or protection were lacking.

How Does AF-EMDR Differ from Traditional EMDR?

While standard EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a powerful method for processing traumatic memories, AF-EMDR adds an intentional focus on relationship, safety, and emotional attunement—especially important for those with attachment trauma.

Key differences include:

  • Stronger Emphasis on the Therapeutic Relationship
The therapist offers warmth, responsiveness, and emotional attunement, creating a safe relational space where healing can occur.

  • Use of Inner Resources Before Trauma Processing
Clients develop inner resources like a “nurturing figure” or “protector figure” before addressing trauma. This helps build emotional resilience and stability.

  • Customized Treatment Plans

AF-EMDR adapts to the client’s unique attachment style, trauma history, and readiness. It allows for more flexibility and gentleness in the healing process.

How AF-EMDR Works

AF-EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or tapping) to help reprocess distressing memories. At the same time, it draws on:

  • Attachment repair

  • Imaginal resourcing

  • Relational support

  • Body-based awareness

By addressing both the memory and the unmet emotional needs from early life, AF-EMDR helps people release old pain, develop self-compassion, and create new, healthier emotional patterns.

Who Can Benefit from AF-EMDR?

AF-EMDR is particularly helpful for:

  • Adults, teens, or children with early attachment wounds

  • Survivors of neglect, emotional abuse, or developmental trauma

  • People who didn’t feel safe or seen in childhood

  • Clients who need a gentler, more relational approach to trauma work

  • Anyone struggling with self-worth, relationships, or chronic emotional pain
